This page describes what happens to your data when you visit whittakertech.com. It covers the site only. WhittakerTech’s gems and documentation sites are separate.
The short version
- The site works without any analytics. Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity load only if you accept them in the banner.
- I use the data to see which pages and posts are useful, and to fix broken pages. I don’t sell it.
- You can change your mind at any time with Cookie settings in the footer.
What is collected, and by whom
Analytics you can accept or decline
- Google Analytics 4 (Google). Page views, approximate location, device and browser details, and how you arrived. It sets cookies in your browser.
- Microsoft Clarity (Microsoft). Anonymised session recordings and heatmaps that show how pages are used: clicks, scrolling, and movement. Clarity masks sensitive input fields by default. It sets cookies in your browser.
If you decline, or your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, neither loads.
Always on
- Cloudflare. The site is served through Cloudflare, which processes requests (including your IP address) to deliver the pages and protect against abuse. I also use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which measures page views without cookies or tracking you across sites.
- GitHub Pages. The site is hosted on GitHub Pages, which keeps standard server logs.
Forms
- Email sign-up. If you enter your email address in the newsletter form, it is sent to Formspree, a form-handling service, and delivered to me. I use it only to tell you about new writing. I keep the list by hand, so to be removed, email me and I’ll delete your address.
Cookies and local storage
wt-consent(local storage on this site): remembers your analytics choice.- Google Analytics and Clarity cookies: only after you accept.
Retention
Analytics data is kept according to each provider’s retention settings. Form submissions are kept until you ask me to delete them.
Your choices
- Use Cookie settings in the footer to accept or decline analytics again.
- Browser settings and Global Privacy Control are respected.
- To ask what I hold about you, or to have it deleted, email [email protected].
Changes
I’ll update this page when the site’s tracking changes. Last updated: 1 October 2026.
